There is / There are: cómo decir «hay» en inglés
En español «hay» sirve para todo: hay un problema, hay dos hoteles, hay mucha gente. El inglés es más exigente: parte ese «hay» en dos según la cantidad. La regla es corta y una vez la ves, no se olvida.
Hay = there is / there are
There is cuando hay UNO. There are cuando hay VARIOS.
| Inglés | Suena así | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| There is a problem. | der is a próblem | Hay un problema. |
| There is a bank near here. | der is a bank níer jíer | Hay un banco cerca. |
| There are two hotels. | der ar tú joutéls | Hay dos hoteles. |
| There are many people. | der ar méni pípol | Hay mucha gente. |
En conversación se contrae: there’s (there is). There’s a problem.
⚠️ Ojo: «hay» NUNCA es have. Have es tener (posesión): «yo tengo». «Hay» (existe algo) es siempre there is / there are.
It has two hotels→ There are two hotels.
Preguntas y negativos
Para preguntar, se invierte; para negar, se agrega not (o any para cantidades):
| Inglés | Suena así | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a bathroom? | is der a bázrum | ¿Hay un baño? |
| Are there any questions? | ar der éni cuéschons | ¿Hay preguntas? |
| There isn’t any milk. | der ísent éni milk | No hay leche. |
| There aren’t any seats. | der árent éni síts | No hay asientos. |
La estructura de preguntas es la misma del verbo to be: el verbo salta al frente. There is → Is there?
En pasado: there was / there were
El mismo patrón, pero con el pasado del to be (was / were):
| Inglés | Suena así | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| There was a party last night. | der uós a párti last náit | Hubo una fiesta anoche. |
| There were many cars. | der uér méni cars | Había muchos carros. |
| Was there a problem? | uós der a próblem | ¿Hubo un problema? |
| There wasn’t enough time. | der uósent ináf táim | No hubo suficiente tiempo. |
